If I Dont Tell Someone Ill Just Bust

Let me start by saying I got into grad school. I am officially a first year graduate student at The George Washington University. I am working on my M.Ed. in Secondary Education and Special Education. So yea for me! Im real happy and real excited and all that jazz.

Its 800 degrees everyday now. I have to walk around campus (and all over NW) in that heat and its NOT a good look. Such is the nature of being a student I guess...but its still not a good look. The only good thing is that my hair is now locked...so the heat and humidity do NOTHING. No accidental afros for MissJennifer...no no no...

On to my day...

I had the worst Wednesday evening ever. I had a conversation with someone and it made me upset. Not the kind of upset where you yell and curse and feel better. The kind of upset that NOTHING cures. The kind that you have to try to sleep through and forget. And I did try that. But when I woke up Thursday morning I still had that pain in my heart...I was shaken to the point that I couldnt really hold on to objects. I dropped everything I touched until about 745 (I get up around 545). I pulled it together though. And no one saw the mess that I was. So...rough morning to say the least...

So anyways...I was getting off the train at DuPont Circle to go to my elementary school. I stepped off the train dreading the fact that I have to go back into the heat. A black man stepped off the train (but a separate car) at the same time. We were headed towards each other. Im listening to my ipod (i know) and I thought I recognized him but Im like 'Jennifer the heat is getting to you'. But I guess he saw the look on my face and with a big welcoming smile said "HELLO!" I say "Are you a writer?" He says "why yes I am". I say "are you a poet" he responds "why yes, I am". I say "wow...are you E. Ethelbert Miller." He says "why YES! I am. And who are you?!" Now, yall know Im obsessed with blk lit and blk poetry. I saw Miller at the Furious Flower Poetry Conferenceand immediately fell in love (with his work that is). He is my 3rd favorite poet. He follows Sanchez (who I met at FF) and Giovanni (who I saw at FF). No. I didnt ask for an autograph or anything...thats not my style. I did, however, rap him up in conversation for the next 15-20. Talked til I got that good business card. (Upon telling him I graduated from HU in 05 he responded "Harvey actually lets people graduate." He didnt laugh). So...anyways...I dont know if he was actually interested in what I was saying or just really good at faking it. I dont even care for real. That was the BEST pick me up ever. It made me really happy and I needed it. I dont have many Favorite People and to run into one on my worst day ever was such a blessing. He watches over me...

I was going to continue on in my blog to talk about life...but I am so happy to replay the Miller story that I have to leave the computer and do something.

I hope everyone is having a day like mine :)

This Post Brought to You By the Color Purple and the Letter S

I got my letter from Talia who got her letter from Jarrod who got his letter from Jameil and so on and so forth...

Ten things that start with the letter S:

*Sex

Im a reader. Ive been a reader forever. I normally reach for a novel, but something came over me about 2 weeks ago in the grocery store. I bought a magazine. It was Cosmo. Some of the articles were great...but why so much about sex? Dont people have things to discuss other than sex or a sexual act or what counts as acceptable with a mate or what you can/cannot do on the first date? Geez...lets talk about world hunger or literacy in this country...

*Sloane

I have a 3 year old cousin named Sloane. She is the youngest grandchild (for today at least since her mother is pregnant with a baby boy :)) Sloane had a dance recital at the other HU's Cramton Auditorium. Again...shes 3. But we were there. She was wondeful. At 3 you cant really go wrong when you have on a dress...u just look like a doll. Afterwards, the fam is all at her house watching tv and carrying on like good black folks do (yes...there was chicken). My 17 year old cousin starts flipping channels and "Lean Wit It" comes on. Sloane begins snapping, leaning, and rocking with it. Throwing her head back and everything. Ridiculous. The babies are sponges...dont let them watch CRAP. Its funny now...it wont be funny when shes 9...

*Silver

I love silver jewelry. I prefer white gold but my wallet doesnt. Apparently gold looks better on my 'skin tone'. (Here is where someone normally calls me light and I start my 'im brown skinned' argument.) I cant even disagree though. Gold does look good on me...but then what DOESNT look good on me? (that was false confidence but it was convincing wasnt it?!)

*Sculpture Garden

I have wanted to visit the Hirshhorn Sculpture Gardenfor a long while (that being maybe 4 months). I dont like to do museum-like visits alone but apparently no one else wants to go. I might just have to brave the heat and make the trip after work this week. Im sure it will be worth it.

*St. Elsewhere

Gnarls Barkley is the truth. Definitely the best album of 2006. Maybe I'm bias because I already liked Cee-Lo. The beats are strange but on point. The songs are all short enough so that the songs dont get annoying. The album is in HEAVY rotation at my desk and on my ipod. If you dont have it you need to check up on it asap.

*School Teacher

Keva and I were at Bowie Town Center the other day. She needs something to wear for her bday and shes in school. I start looking around and Keva says "No long skirts and cardigans for you Jennifer. You arent going out with me looking like a school teacher!" The SHOCK! Me...conservative? Of course you wont catch me with any body parts hanging out EVER...but does that mean I dress like a school teacher? I just like to look like the lady I am. I dont think there is anything wrong with that.

*Songs

(Im just going to list my top 5 for this week...and I mean literally this week...)

1. Hold My Hand - Van Hunt
2. Superwoman - Stevie Wonder
3. Trouble - Amel Larrieux
4. Call Me When You Get This - Corinne Bailey Rae
5. Necromancing - Gnarls Barkley

*Stinky Scratches

There is one particular creepy IT guy at my job. He used to say real suspect things in my presence but then I got a new boss (a 30-something black man) and he stopped bothering me. Hes the one in the office who touches ALL of the treats that people buy. You know...smelling all the donuts before picking...yea that guy. I have to talk to him regularly because I break things and need them to be fixed. I walk back into the IT office to ask for a laptop. The IT guy leans back in his chair (as though I asked a difficult question, sticks his index finger between 2 of the buttons on his shirt, and digs in his navel. How do I know he was in his navel you ask...HE DOESNT WEAR A TEE/BEATER UNDER HIS DRESS SHIRT. You can see the outline of his navel because his gut is constantly on the verge of explosion out of his shirt. So hes digging...pulls something out...rolls it between his index finger and thumb and flicks it towards his monitor. He continued the conversation like it never happened. I know his fingers smelled bad. I know he wanted to smell them because he is just THAT creepy. YEESH!

*Science (and Mathematics)

I dont care that I have a "liberal arts" degree. I cannot do a math problem or answer a question about science to save my life. How am I to survive a standardized test? Its not fair...I dont need science or math in grad school...I can count my money. I can calculate percentages. I know how to pay off student loans. What more is necessary?

*Student Loans

Student loans make me want to cry. If one more person says "your education was an investment and it was worth it" i will swing. If I hit the lottery, I will pay off everyone's student loans. I dont want anyont to have to deal with this CRAP anymore.

...that was more difficult than expected. Until the next post...
